The 22-year-old man who allegedly ran over an 80-year-old Trump supporter with an ATV has been found dead in his home on Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

According to a Tuesday release from the Houghton County Sheriff's Office, Hancock Police and sheriff's deputies arrived at the 22-year-old's Quincy Township home on Monday and found him dead by a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Earlier that day, the man had sent a message to the Hancock Police stating he wanted to "confess a crime involving an ATV driver within the last 24 hours."

According to an earlier release, police responded to three politically motivated incidents on Sunday, involving the suspect—running over the 80-year-old man and two counts of vehicle vandalism.

The 22-year old allegedly drove an ATV onto the 80-year-old's yard while he was putting up a Donald Trump campaign sign and intentionally ran him over.

The 80-year-old suffered serious injuries and remained in critical condition as of Monday.

The sheriff's office statement said the vandalized vehicles displayed law enforcement appreciation stickers it described as "thin blue line paraphernalia," referencing the politically divisive flag which symbolizes the police as defenders of law and order.

After finding the 22-year-old dead, the sheriff's office obtained a search warrant for his home and found several electronic devices which they said would be searched by computer forensic experts. They also found evidence on the ATV as well as the clothes the suspect wore on Sunday.

Multiple agencies including Houghton County Police and Sheriff's Office, Hancock City Police, Michigan State Police, and the Michigan FBI field office are part of the ongoing investigation.

The recent assassination attempt against Trump has renewed trepidation in a hot political environment. Threats and violence remain a major concern heading into November's presidential election.

Just last week, police in Jupiter, Florida, arrested one individual on Friday who was accused of making threats online toward Trump and Senator JD Vance, the Republican vice presidential nominee.

In 2023, a 75-year-old Utah man was shot dead by the FBI while they were searching his home after he claimed on social media he was planning to clean "the dust off the m24 sniper rifle," ahead of Biden's scheduled trip to the state.

In 2022, a 19-year-old crashed a rented truck into barriers outside the White House bearing a Nazi flag and threatened to kill Biden.
